Block Time Calculator

Add and subtract flight time in HH:MM. Minutes roll over at 60, so 01:45 + 00:30 is 02:15, not 01:75.

Block Time Calculator is an app for iPhone, iPad and Android that adds and subtracts flight and duty time in hours and minutes. It costs US$0.99 once, works offline and collects no data. The calculator on this page runs the same engine as the app, so you can try it right here, with the keypad or your keyboard.

      How it works

      Hours and minutes, never decimals

      No colon key

Digits fill in from the right, like an ATM. Type 4, 1, 5 and the display reads:

      04:15

      Minutes roll over at 60

Sixty minutes carry into the next hour, the way a logbook adds up.

      01:45 + 00:30 = 02:15

      Subtract the same way

Borrowing works in hours and minutes too.

      05:15 − 00:45 = 04:30

      Keep adding legs

After =, the total stays on screen. Press + and type the next leg, or C to start again.

      06:45 + 01:20 = 08:05

      Totals past 24 hours

Hours keep counting past 24, so a logbook page or career total adds up.

      186:40 + 07:35 = 194:15

      Reuse any result

Every result stays in the history with its formula. Tap a row to carry on from that total.

      02:15 ↳ 01:45 + 00:30

Block Time Calculator for iPhone, iPad and Android

The same calculator, built for the flight deck: one screen, big digits, nothing in the way.

      • True HH:MM math: automatic 60-minute rollover, no mental conversions.
      • ATM-style input: no colon key, so typing stays quick and steady in turbulence.
      • Live history: every result is saved with its formula; tap one to carry on from it.
      • Running tape: every leg on its own numbered line with a running subtotal, right beside the history. Subtractions stand out in red.
      • Fix without retyping: tap a line on the tape to change its time, or tap its sign to flip + and −.
      • Night and day themes: high-contrast dark and light modes for any cockpit lighting.

      FAQ

      Questions pilots ask

      What is block time?

Block time runs from the moment the aircraft first moves off its parking position for the flight (off-blocks) to the moment it comes to rest on the stand at the end of it (on-blocks). It includes taxi, so it is always longer than airborne time. Under both EASA and FAA rules, logged flight time for aeroplanes runs from that first movement until the aircraft comes to rest after landing, which is why block time is the number most pilots log.

How do I work out block time from off-block and on-block times?

      Subtract off-blocks from on-blocks. For off-blocks at 11:55 and on-blocks at 14:20, type 1420, −, 1155, = and the answer is 02:25.

How do I calculate block time across midnight?

      Add 24:00 to the on-block time, then subtract the off-block time. For off-blocks at 22:45 and on-blocks at 01:10, type 110, +, 2400, −, 2245, = and the answer is 02:25.

Why not use a normal calculator?

A normal calculator counts in tens. Type 1.45 + 0.30 and it says 1.75, which is not a time. Block Time Calculator counts minutes in sixties, so 01:45 + 00:30 is 02:15.

My logbook uses decimal hours. Can I still use it?

Yes. Add the times in HH:MM, then convert the total by dividing the minutes by 60: 02:15 is 2.25 hours and 06:45 is 6.75 hours.

Can a total go past 24 hours?

Yes. Hours are not capped at 24, so a logbook page or career total such as 1250:35 adds up correctly.

What happens if a result is negative?

It is shown with a minus sign. For example, 00:30 − 01:00 = −00:30, so you can see that you subtracted more than you had.

Does the app need an internet connection or collect any data?

No. The app works fully offline and makes no network connections. It has no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and your calculations and theme setting never leave your device.

Is the calculator on this page the same as the app?

It runs the same calculation engine, so the results match. The app adds operand editing, dark and light themes, haptic key feedback and a tablet layout, and it works without a connection.
